Salt
Following ancient architectural examples of 'continuous narrative' in which iconic stories were illustrated scene by scene on stone columns or tapestries, my ephemeral series, Continuous Narrative (2015), inscribes new narratives written with table salt on the gallery floor to express the feminine maternal and stretch conventional ideas of image and icon. 12 years 5 months 6 days (2016) continues this meditation on the daily postures and interactions of the maternal body. Like the ancient forms of contemplative traditions, the figures cast in salt become iconic, recording instances of labour, love and care. Saltcellars (2017) extends and preserves this work. Salt persists as the preservative of taste, tears, life and death; a symbol of the maternal, the feminine and the deep divine.
